Teaching is communicating information in a way that is accessible by a student and respectful of their individual learning style. Learning is the process of taking in information and processing that information in a way that allows for retention and meaningful understanding. Plus so much more!
I know as a parent, each of my children are opposite learners to one another, which has been a bit of a surprise. They each have such different passions and natural abilities, so engaging them in learning has been very challenging because we’ve had to pivot so often. This has opened up many different tactics and pedagogy, but throughout
I have been a yoga teacher for 20 years and have always loved teaching. I love children, their honesty, creativity, and especially their inquisitive minds. I have worked at the Uxbridge Public Library for almost 7 years and I have run literacy programs, tween and teen programs, STEM and STEAM PD day events and every time I learn so much from the kids. I am a big proponent of STEAM opposed to STEM with my younger participants because it has more in-roads for those who are not confident in STEM subjects, and also can encourage those reluctant artists to be creative in an environment that they are more comfortable in.
My vision for teaching is very much informed by excellent teachers I have had in the past. I had a very impactful teacher in Grade 7 and I want to be that for my students. Someone they trust, someone who will go to bat for them, and someone who has their best interests at heart. Firm, but kind boundaries is our general parenting philosophy which I hope will inform my teaching framework. I also want to be a lifelong learner. I am a lifelong learner and the more schooling and life experience I gain the more certain I am that I will learn from my students as much as they will learn from me.
